Sit Thee Dahn....
Ever wondered why we say “thee” and “thou,” or why Yorkshire accents and words vary across the enormous region of the white rose?
Whether you’re a born-and-bred Yorkshire soul or you’ve recently moved to our beautiful village, we invite you to join us for the Yorkshire Dialect Club at Honley Library.
What’s it all about?
Over six informal sessions, we’ll be exploring the rich linguistic history of the region. No dry, academic lecturing - this is a chance to gather as a community and discover how our ancestors spoke.
You’ll learn where the dialect came from and discover why it is every bit as grammatically sophisticated (if not more so!) than 'Standard English'.
Who is it for?
Everyone aged 12 and up: We want this to be a truly intergenerational event. Grandparents, teens, and everyone in between are welcome!
No experience needed: You don't need to know owt about linguistics, and you don't even need to have a Yorkshire accent to join in the fun.
The Best Part?
It’s completely FREE! Plus, there is no need to commit to all six sessions. The club meets on different days of the week, so if you can’t make one, you might be able to make "t’other."
